Friends in Fiordland, New Zealand

Two weeks, the open road and two friends take on the South Island, New Zealand! Laura and I made the trek to the land of kiwis (not the fruit) in February (yes, this post is quite delayed) and had a journey fit for Bilbo Baggins himself.

So here we go with – Fiordland! Which for us can be summed up in 3 words… Milford Sound & sandflies. I swear those buggers should be the national animal!

Stopping for a break in Eglinton Valley

Only one road leads in and out of Fiordland National Park and the drive in itself is spectacular

The weather can change quite suddenly here and we found ourselves admist some low clouds and misty rain.

Heading out for our cruise on the sound! We took a smaller boat up the fiord to enjoy the views only causing a mild case of seasickness.

Milford Sound is one of the wettest places in the world and the drizzle along with heavy fog certainly set a mystical mood. It rains for around 180 days of the year here, with rainfall reaching up to 10 inches in a 24 hour period!

I had originally hoped to see the sound on a sunny day but in retrospect we enjoyed seeing it in the rain. Felt like its true nature!

There were so many waterfalls cascading down the cliffs of the sound, it was impossible to keep count and only 2 are permanent.

Cruising through the Milford Sound was a real highlight of our New Zealand trip!
