Our last few days in Portugal were spent traveling to various stages of the World Rally Championship. Jason has always wanted to attend a WRC event and I was happy to help him with this dream!
The rally was quite an experience. I have never been so covered in dust in my life and I’m not sure my camera has recovered. Attendance was up near 50,000 and the fans were enthusiastic, passionate and in some cases downright dangerous. If you look up the 1986 rally, you will see why Portuguese fans are infamous. But I will say, hearing the cars approach from miles away and then blast by you in seconds is something I will never forget!
Fans at the Lousada track for the Super Special Stage
The good thing about the Super Special Stage is you can see the entire course. The only problem was it was very hot that day!
This car smashed their front suspension on a rock and it briefly caught fire. The drivers then had to wait for their car to be towed off.
Sébastien Ogier was said to be the driver to beat but actually took 2nd place behind his Volkswagen teammate Jari-Matti Latvala.
